About Us...

...rolling hills, beech woods, pretty villages, beautiful old churches; the images of Guildford as a comparatively affluent diocese, yet there exist many areas of real poverty and distress. The Mothers' Union addresses these issues by offering prayerful support and practical assistance, putting our faith into action where it is needed most.

We are but a drop in the ocean.....

MU Guildford is committed to furthering the work of the Mothers' Union both locally, through our link dioceses abroad and by helping fund the national and worldwide MU projects. Now 130 years old, the MU has more than 3.5 million members in 76 countries. All over the world, men, women - single or married - join in the work of MU, supporting family life, giving women the means to take charge of their own lives, with the consequent benefits to their families and communities. Their work is life changing - they pass on skills such as literacy and numeracy which have immediate effect on a local scale, or campaign on issues both nationally and globally.

Aim & Objectives

The aim of the MU is to strengthen and preserve marriage and family life through Christianity. In order to carry out this aim, our objectives are:

To uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wider understanding. To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church. To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service. To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children. To help those whose family life has met with adversity

What we stand for

The Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation with more than 3 million members in over 70 countries. Though our lives and experience of the Mothers' Union may differ widely depending on where we are, we are united by our shared belief in the importance of family values. We all have something to offer and something to learn. We have strong personal links between members around the world, and we unite in prayer, worship and fellowship. We have prayers everyday for our members in dioceses across the globe.

Our mission

The Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation which promotes the well-being of families worldwide. We achieve this by: - Developing prayer and spiritual growth in families -Studying and reflecting on family life and marriage and its place in society - Resourcing our members for practical action to improve conditions for families, nationally and in the communities in which they live

What we do

Our members support family life where there is a need within their own communities. We are involved in a great diversity of activities from worldwide literacy development to parenting projects in the UK. The work of the diocese and branch has an impact on a national and international scale.
We are involved in campaigning and lobbying on worldwide issues, such as parental rights, international debt relief and child poverty. We are pleased to work in partnership with organisations such as the United Nations, Hope UK and various other ecumenical groups.

Who we are

There is an elected board of Trustees, who represent the worldwide membership, chaired by the Worldwide President. Diocesan Presidents meet regularly at world wide council and elect leaders. All terms of office are for three years. Dedicated professional staff support all our work.

The Mothers' Union has four units, led by elected members. These are: - Action & Outreach projects at home and abroad - Finance & Central Services managing our financial and administrative affairs - Marketing promoting our work and supporting members - Prayer, Spirituality & Social Policy resourcing and encouraging our spiritual lives and putting faith into practice

MU Enterprises

MUe is the trading company of the Mothers' Union, producing an attractive range of cards and goods which are sold through Enterprise representatives in every UK diocese. Profits from sales are covenanted back to each Diocesan MU. There are three MUe representatives in Guildford Diocese.
