From the Holy Trinity and St Mary's World War I
Monthly Journal December 1914


'The Rector went to Southampton Docks to bid goodbye to the men of the Queen's Regiment. The colours of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Queen's were laid up for the war in the Queen's Chapel.

The parish hail had been turned into a club for HM Forces, and was mainly used by the Reserve Battalion.

The Mothers Union was holding intercessions for soldiers and sailors in the Parish Rooms...'

St. Mary's is the oldest church in Guildford. People have worshipped here for more than one thousand years. The tower was at the west end of the first stone church on the site, built perhaps as early as 950. The church was at the top of a steep slope.
